Press "Try another version" for different first and middle verses. There are four in all. Copy the one you like and change any word that doesn't sound like them.

How it is put together

The poem has three verses of four lines in rhyming pairs. The first is about the years, the second is about them at work, and the third is about what comes next. Their name, job and hobby sit where they can't break a rhyme, so the poem still works whatever you type.

We wrote every line for this page. None of it is taken from a published poem, so you can use it in a card, a speech or a newsletter without asking anyone.

Reading it out loud

Read it through twice before the day. Slow down on the last two lines of each verse: that's where the rhyme lands and the room catches up. If it's a light poem, look up from the paper on the joke. Our speech and card helper plans the words around it, and retirement quotes has shorter lines.
