Plan the speech

Answer what you can. The outline fills in as you type.

Most leaving speeches are short, and given in a room like this.

How to use it

Type their first name and say who is speaking. Pick how long you have. Then add what you know: the years, the job, one word for them, one story, and what they are doing next. The outline fills in as you type.

Each part has a note on what to say and a first line made from your answers. Read the first lines out loud and change them until they sound like you. "Copy the outline" puts the whole plan, with the card messages, on your clipboard.

How the time is split

The split is our own suggestion. It isn't a rule. The opening and the toast get 10% of the time each. Their years and what comes next get 15% each. What they brought gets 20%, and the story gets 30%, because the story's the part people remember. Times are rounded to the nearest 5 seconds.

A few things that help

One story is better than three. Tell it in order: where you were, what happened, and what it showed about them. Keep the joke on the situation, so they're laughing too, and check any story with someone who was there. Look up for the toast, say their name, and then sit down: a speech that ends on time is remembered kindly.

Make it personal

A few practical answers

How long should a retirement speech be?

There is no rule. The helper offers two to five minutes. In our view, a short speech that ends on a toast goes down better than a long one, whoever is giving it.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The outline is put together in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I use the card messages?

Yes. We wrote them for this tool, and you are welcome to copy and change them.
