How to choose a personalised retirement gift

Most retirees receive a card, a bouquet, and something generic. The question isn't whether your gift fits "retirement" — it's whether the gift recognises their career. Two practical notes from the orders we send:

• Get the name and profession right. Some people have a formal job title and a name everyone uses — check both before you order. We cannot refund or reprint personalisation typos.
• Years of service is optional but meaningful. The service line — printed in italic below the name — anchors the gift to the actual career. For a long-serving colleague, it's the line that turns a print into a career marker.

Why a personalised retirement gift lands differently

Around 700,000 people retire in the UK every year. Most of them receive a card signed by whoever was in the office, a generic voucher, and a tin of biscuits. None of it marks what they actually did — the role, the years, the colleagues, the career that shaped them.

Retirement send-offs are rarely planned far in advance. These are the practical timings to know:

• Tier A products (prints, mugs, totes, t-shirts, phone cases): 1–3 days production, 2–5 days delivery — allow a week to be safe.
• Portrait canvases (from a photo of the retiree, their workplace, boat or garden): 7–10 working days end to end. Order with a fortnight to spare.
• Digital downloads: instant delivery by email — useful when the leaving do is tomorrow.
• Christmas: Order Tier A products by 18 December and portrait canvases by 12 December for pre-Christmas delivery.

Common questions

Can I personalise the print with any name and profession? Yes — the name prints, mugs, totes, t-shirts, and phone cases use editorial typography with the retiree's name, profession, and years of service. The portrait canvas is generated from a photo and captures a person, place, or scene.

Can I order on behalf of someone else as a surprise gift? Yes — you need the retiree's name, their profession, and their years of service. They do not need to be involved.

What if I don't know the exact years of service? An approximate figure is fine. We print what you provide, so double-check before submitting — we cannot refund personalisation typos.

Is everything actually made in the UK? Production is via Gelato's UK partners (Birmingham, London) for Tier A products. The portrait canvas is generated digitally then printed at the UK partner. Shipped from UK locations via Royal Mail or DPD.

What if a gift arrives damaged? Email hello@theretirementgiftco.com with a photo of the damage — we replace at our cost, no questions for genuinely damaged items. For personalisation typos, the order isn't refundable (we cannot resell the personalised piece) but we'll usually offer a discount on a corrected reprint.
