Month-end birthdays the law fixes by date: born 31 July 1960, 30 November 2026; born 31 December 1960, 30 September 2027; born 31 January 1961, 30 November 2027.

How to use it

Type the day, month and year of birth. If the date is before 6 December 1953, the tool also asks for legal sex, because until then the law set different ages for men and women. After that date it is the same for everyone.

You get the day State Pension age is reached, the age that means, and how many days away it is. Under the tool, "The whole table in the law" opens every row the calculator uses.

How it is worked out

The ages are set by Schedule 4 to the Pensions Act 1995, as changed by the Pensions Acts of 2007, 2011 and 2014. It has a rule for each range of birth dates. Some ranges reach State Pension age at a set age, on a birthday. Others reach it on a fixed day written into the law, so people born a month apart can be months apart in the answer.

The calculator reads that table from legislation.gov.uk every night and checks it before using it. The line under the tool says when it was last checked. If the checks fail for long, the page says the table is being re-checked, and you should rely on GOV.UK.

Three birthdays at the end of a month have their own day in the law, and the calculator uses those. A 29 February birthday reaches an age on 1 March in a year with no 29 February. That is what GOV.UK's checker gives too.

The date is when the State Pension can start. It doesn't have to be the day work stops.

What it does not tell you

This is the age, not the amount. GOV.UK says you can keep working after State Pension age, and that the old forced retirement age of 65 no longer exists. For how much someone will get, GOV.UK has a State Pension forecast. Its checker also gives the Pension Credit qualifying age and when you can get a bus pass.

The table here is the one legislation.gov.uk shows for England, Wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland, use GOV.UK's checker.

Once the date is known, the retirement countdown counts the days, and the years of service calculator works out the years for the card and the print.

A few practical answers

Is this the official answer?

No. It works from the same law, but GOV.UK's State Pension age checker is the official tool. Use it to confirm the date before you plan around it.

Can State Pension age change?

Yes, if Parliament changes the law. GOV.UK's checker says the age "may change following review of the State Pension age". The calculator re-reads the law every night, so a change shows here once it is in force.

Is State Pension age the same as retirement age?

No. GOV.UK says you can keep working after you reach State Pension age, and the "default retirement age" of 65 no longer exists. It is the earliest age the State Pension can be paid.

Why does it ask for legal sex?

Only for dates of birth before 6 December 1953. Until then the law gave men and women different State Pension ages. GOV.UK's checker asks the same question for the same reason.
